The leaning temple of Huma

The leaning temple of Huma

About 28 km from Sambalpur, in the state of Orissa lays the Huma Temple which is a leaning structure, considered as Indian equivalent of Leaning Tower of PISA. Experts are foxed by this temple because Silpasashtra, the traditional manual for temple architecture, does not mention such edifices.

Located on the banks of the river Mahanadi, the 17th century temple of Huma leans at an angle of 47 degrees to the west. Not only the main temple but also the smaller temples in the compound and the gateway lean, although at different angles! What is even more puzzling is that while the edifice leans, the pinnacle is perpendicular to the ground.

This temple, dedicated to Lord Bimaleswar, is a Saivite shrine in village Huma, 28 km Sambalpur, the premier western Orissa city.

Believed to have been built in 1670 A.D. by King Baliar Singh, the fifth king of Sambalpur's Chauhan dynasty, this temple has baffled historians and architects over the years. There have been some theories, none of them very convincing, that seek to explain the strange phenomenon. Some of the most popular theories are the tilt is due to some defect in construction, due to weak foundation, due to the displacement of the rock bed.

But there is no visible crack on the body of the temple which is a rather small structure. All these combine to disprove the theories and the impression gets credence that the temple would not lean unless built like that.

There is, however, a legend associated with this temple. The story goes that the lingam around which the temple is built was originally discovered by a cowherd. One of his cows would go into the jungle everyday and return without any milk. The bewildered cowherd followed the cow one day and was amazed to find the animal standing over a black rock spraying it with its milk. It did not take the cowherd long to realize that the rock was in fact a Sivalinga and he began worshipping the God there everyday.

Huma is a picturesque place that attracts many picnickers. A large fair is held here on the Siva Chaturdasi day in February. A flight of steps connects the temple to the river which has an abundance of fish. The devotees offer food to these fish which are never hooked as they are considered devotees of Lord Siva. Interestingly, the leaning temple is no mystery to the people of the village. They firmly believe that it was built by Viswakarma, the divine architect!

Sambalpur is at a distance of 300 km from the state capital of Bhubaneswar and is well connected by bus and rail service. While Sambalpur has a number of lower, medium and a few top end hotels, a cab can be hired to reach the leaning temple of Huma. But make your own food arrangement.

CRY OF A MUNDANE, BUT IT IS FROM THE HEART.

The list is long but the modus of operandi is obvious. I can name a few only. Whether it is "The Satanic Verses" of Salman Rushdie or "Lajja" of Taslima Nasrin or for that matter Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, the secret is, touch the magic stone of religion your popularity shall soar high. Can I say religion is the ladder to popularity? No, it is the misuse of religion is the ladder to popularity. Call it blasphemy? Call it notoriety small mind wanting to be big. No matter. They have become already big and we have accepted them as big minds. They have exploited to your curiosity and inquisitiveness. Great manipulators they are!

Take the example of this great artist of India who has been recently conferred with Raja Ravi Verma Award by Kerala State Government for his artistic creations. Read the list of his creations. While reading, do not forget the fact that more than 80 percent populations of this country profess Hinduism.

NAKED LORD HANUMAN AND GODDESS SITA SITTING ON THIGH OF RAVAN.

NAKED GODDESS SARASWATI.

GODDESS LAKSHMI NAKED ON SHREE GANESH'S HEAD.

NAKED GODDESS PARVATI.

The list does not end there. I have named a few. I have no ugly desire to show those blasphemous art works here. Every person on this earth considers his country as motherland. But not this great artist. He depicts an art work showing his country of birth as NAKED LADY. Too much. Is he fit to be called civilized? Think. Go above the narrowness of religion, region and color just think for a moment. Is it right? Is it called artistic freedom? Does the artistic freedom give the freedom to tarnish the image of anything and everything? Does that freedom give the right to hurt the sentiments of others? Literatures and arts are supposed to create tranquility not chaos. These are supposed to bring harmony, contentment, joy and pleasure of life. There are supposed to be harbinger of peace and unity. Not otherwise. Certainly not displeasure, divide and discontentment. If it is so, certainly these do not qualify to be literature and art. Expressions of mischievous minds, in short. But the politicians of my country do not think so. The media of my country do not think so too. Artistic expression has no limit and no boundary and artistic imagination for that matter has no legs. It floats and surpasses everything. Politicians say so. Media say so! Why? Anybody is listening to my cry? Or you think I am shedding crocodile's tears?

If this is not enough look at the recent pronunciation of an astute and much respected politician of South India. Read what he says. Please do not again forget about the majority religion of this country.

15TH SEPTEMBER 2007: Who is Rama? Where is the proof for his existence? Where did he learn engineering to build Rama Sethu? Is it not the return of the dark days of superstition to cite a non-existent Rama to block a development project?

20th SEPTEMBER 2007: Rama's biographer Valmiki himself had depicted Rama as a drunkard after all.

Please forgive me here. Though I have read haphazardly all the six parts of Ramayana translated in my mother tongue way back in 1978, I do not possess a great memory to remember such minute details. I leave that for some of my knowledgeable friends to explore regarding the issue of Rama depicted as drunkard. But all I can say with confidence, and for that matter anybody will say so, that engineering skills were applied first and then taught in engineering colleges. We had engineering skills and minds in past though we did not have engineering colleges.

The respectable politician said so in the context of SETU SAMUDRAM PROJECT, the topic of debate in India now. This is a navigation canal project in the sea between India and Srilanka which shall cut across a bridge (man-made or natural). This bridge has sentimental attachment amongst Hindus who believe that it was constructed by Lord Rama

But my humble submission and objection to the respected politician that he could have preferred to use a better language and expression. It certainly hurts my belief, my faith and my sentiment. So many will say so, it is not me alone. I do agree the economic requirements and welfare of the people come first and sentiments later. This is the teaching and learning I see in the character of Lord Rama. This is what Valmiki's Ramayana teaches.

So establish the economics and viability of the project. Study the environmental impact including that of Tsunami. Study the defense requirements of the country. And the last and but not least what about those thorium deposits? Government of India must do the damage control. It must come out with a white paper regarding this project addressing all the issues involved for public knowledge. If all issues are addressed and economics of the project are established and no other alternative route is feasible, I am sure the true followers of Lord Rama shall welcome this project for the sacrifice is other name of Lord Rama and that is the teaching of Ramayana. But for heaven sake do not bad mouth my God and do not make nude picture of HIM. You may not believe HIM, I do believe HIM. And a mundane and lesser mortal like me is as human being as you are and have same right as you have. My religion teaches me to live and let live. I have no unhealthy curiosity to look into what you do. Please do not question and disfigure what I believe in. Please! A Hindu appeals!! Allow me to live!!!

HEALTH CHECK UP OF BUILDINGS.

Hyderabad, the fast emerging IT capital of India is recently in news for all wrong reasons. A series of terrorist activities, starting from a powerful bomb blast during Friday prayers at the historic Mecca mosque in the charminar area of Hyderabad on 18th may 2007 which resulted in 12 persons killed and 40 injured to the very recent two powerful near-simultaneous blasts at crowded Lumbini park and popular eating joint Gokul chat shop leaving a toll of 30 persons dead and 60 injured, have tried to jolt the economic backbone and secular fiber of the historic city. But the city is resilient enough to bounce back on its feet. Naturally this type of situation will lead to lot of media discussion and analysis when a serious looking frog-faced politician wags his tongue and the mike-holding news reporter while giving triumphant squint to the camera repeats the oft-repeated questions. Only God can tell how serious both (politician and news reporter) of them really are? Leave apart. At least I should not make a mockery of whole issue of terrorism by making fun of our politicians and news reporters. Some other day. Ok.

Till now you must be thinking what this useless (me) is talking of. Subject is one thing and substance is something else. Ok, let me comeback to the main topic. I was just trying a flip-flop as I am an aspiring politician too! Enough!! Let us go to Hyderabad once again.

NOW READ ON THIS NEWS REPORT-------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hyderabad: Around 30 people were feared dead and another 20 injured after an under-construction flyover collapsed in Hyderabad's busy Panajagutta area late Sunday evening.

The flyover had been under-construction for the past one year, and was to be inaugurated this December.

Sources told CNN-IBN that the number of dead could be 30 at the city's NIMS Hospital and Apollo Hospital, by late Sunday night.

Four injured were taken to the city's Apollo Hospital. After hours of cutting through the concrete slabs, only two bodies had been recovered from the debris by 23:00 hours IST. A total of nine vehicles were still trapped out of which, 3 were auto rickshaws and 9 cars.

OOPS! Again, Hyderabad for wrong reason. Do not worry Hyderabadi. Things happen only in a happening city. Let me eat my words by praising politicians. My salute goes to that astute politician Sri Chandrababu Naidu who made the Hyderabad a happening city.

Now, my friend have you ever thought of about these type collapses? Buildings collapse. Overhead water tanks collapse. Bridges collapse. Flyovers collapse. These are many. As frequent as terrorist attacks. But irony is that we never discuss those. Media too does not give much attention as these are not as glamorous as sting operations.

Believe me these collapses are really devastating. Watch these videos. These are from all over the world including India.

Now the mute question is whether these collapses can be prevented. Can we be sure while purchasing a house with the savings of our entire life that the quality of construction is good and at least the building shall survive four to five decades? Can we be little more vigilant and informed about the durability of a house while purchasing it? Can we predict the approximate life of the building? Can we diagnose the genetic or inherited defect in the construction which shall jeopardize the life of the building? Can we know the soundness of an old building we are going to purchase or we live in? Yes, you can do that by carrying out a HEALTH CHECK UP of the building which shall cost you hardly 2 to 3 percent of the purchase cost, a negligible amount considering that registration of a property including stamp duty expenditure costs you nearly 10 percent of purchase cost. Of course here I am describing the Indian scenario.

You must have started scolding me with choicest vocabularies at your disposal. Useless! What this fellow with a funny name is talking of? Are the buildings are living beings whose health can be checked?

Yes, engineers can check the health of a building, diagnosis the problem and suggest remedy as doctor does for a living being. Like living being it can be a routine or preventive health check up or a health check up after the symptoms of disease is manifested. Hold on. Technology is identical, comprising of physical observations, x-rays, scanning, ultrasound, endoscopies, sample analyses etc and etc. Almost similar. But here you do not go to a doctor; you go to a Civil Engineer. Depending on the problems again you have to approach specialist amongst Civil Engineers.

I know my friends will read "Munna Bhai" in place of "specialist amongst Civil Engineer". Yes, with my parijat flower I am going to create an equivalent of aroma therapy for concrete structures. Oops! Who threw those eggs to me!!

Now, Let me introduce you some of the equipments used for HEALTH CHECK UP of the building.

REBOUND HAMMER: It senses the soundness of concrete up to a marginal depth.

IMPACT ECHO TESTER: Finds out defects in the interior of concrete.

ULTRASONIC TESTERS: Scans through the concrete for the full depth/thickness.

COVER METER: Finds out the cover to the reinforcement (steel bars inside the concrete).

PROFOMETER: Establishes configuration and quantum of interior reinforcements (steel bars inside the concrete)

REBAR PHOTOGRAPHER: Displays interior reinforcements (steel bars) skeleton.

ENDOSCOPIC DEVICE: To examine the void in the concrete.

THERMOGRAPHIC CAMERA: To locate possible defect in a new building.

CRACK MEASUREMENT DEVICE: It measures surface cracks.

PERMEABILITY TESTER: Tests for water penetration in concrete.

THICKNESS GAUGE: Measures the thickness from the surface.

LEAK SEEKER: It locates source of leakages.

COROSION ANALYZER: It measures the extent of corrosion in reinforcements. Corrosion is regarded as equivalent of cancer in the concrete.

X-RAY: Scans inside the concrete.

NOW SEE THIS VIDEO WHICH SHOWS YOU THE EQUIPMENTS USED FOR HEALTH CHECK UP OF THE BUILDINGS.

Now, I know, what you are thinking of and looking for. You are thinking of calling "Munna Bhai" while purchasing a new house and you are desperately looking for my address. Oops! Again!! Why are you throwing eggs to me!!!

PLEASE READ ON------------------------------

I, Miss Payel Bhattacharya, according to clinical analysis, am suffering from a very rare condition called von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL). Due to lack of labs where genetic mutation can be detected in India, my condition cannot be proved genetically; but a certain person carrying more than one tumors called haemamgioma are generally considered to be a VHL patient by clinical diagnosis.

Presently I'm going through a tough time with tumors all over my liver, covering 60% of it within 6 months of my Brain Surgery. According to most doctors, I require a liver transplant to survive, and they prefer Dr.Subhash Gupta of Appolo, Delhi due to his expertise. According to sources, it might require around $ 62500 (i.e.) Indian Rs 25 lacs and if complications arise even more will be required.

I come from a middle-class background and my father is retired. He also had a severe heart attack within 1 month of my brain surgery and was on ventilator for 9 long days. His condition is also not well (ejection fraction/output of heart is very low and blocked heart). When he had this heart attack doctors said his possibility of surviving is extremely low, but he survived and is now on medication. According to Cardiologists, another attack will surely kill him. My family runs on his pensions only because everything he earned during his employment in a clerical job in National Insurance Company Limited is exhausted due to my illness. I had to abandon my Graduation due to my illness too, hence couldn't utilize whatever he invested on my studies.

My liver condition is such that I require treatment as early as possible. According to doctors, I require treatment soon as precious time is being lost and the haemangiomas are spreading fast and soon might become fatal.

Hence I require reaching out to kind people who can help me live a painless life and also help me survive my liver condition this time.

PARIJAT-33

Greenish and fresh patches of ferns on the wall of temple were slippery. But he tried to climb over that, panting and slipping with desperation and agility. Grips were loosening and sliding fast, one grip should hold before the other slips, no pattern, no synchronization but one grip must hold. His knees and elbows bruised by now, ebbed out a whimper of pain slow and low, but that did not hold him back. Blinded by arrows of opal Sun of afternoon his eyes squeezed in avoidance, but soon the tear of efforts and hopes formed a filter and barrier to show him the vision of the crawls ahead of him. A few more grunting efforts will take him to that cantilever of the temple where he can sit and pant and look desperately to the rasping water below to rush and gush with admonition and desperation.

Green ferns over the tapered walls of temple were like green spinach, thick, viscous and slippery. Each efforts of him on thick ferns make those to bleed green and thick and that mixes with his blood, thin and red oozing out of his bruised skins. The bruised skins burns and itches but the paste of green fluid at least closes the tiny pours of bruised skin. The bleeding stops but burning continues. A coordinated and labored efforts ultimately brought him to that horizontal cantilever from the inclined and tapered walls of the temple. The horizontal cantilever, big enough a person to sit and relax, was new to him. He does not understand the intricacy of temple architecture nor does he understand the intricacy of the life. All he wanted to live the life straight only to discover and explore that it is not so simple as he thinks and imagines, but is full of bends, bumps, humps ,ruts and buts, all connected yet disconnected ,all relevant yet irrelevant ,apparent yet mysterious like the divide lines amongst approaching waves.

A few moments of rest on that cantilever brought down his panting and grasping. He looked down. Riot of water. Flood of water. Dance of water devastating and naked. Whim of water ghostly rustling and rattling. It swelled and expanded. There was never silence but always roar and shriek of water. The shriek became louder as it entered inside the temple through narrow entrance to the temple and came out of the entrance in the opposite side. It first took away the flowers kept on the feet of the black granite image of the LORD. Then those burnt earthen lamps. Flowers from Lord's head followed.

The sacred metallic ghee lamp on the pedestal also floated away before colliding twice in the trunk of the coconut tree. It is that lamp which flickers and bumpers in the slow swing of the air but lasts up to midnight. Many insects die by jumping to that light. No fault of those ignorant and tiny creatures but blame the temptation. Some get drowned in the viscous ghee the aroma of which dragged them. Again do not blame them. It is temptation too. The lamp too is not at fault. It emits light. It removes darkness of the dark surrounding. It too burns. It does not keep count how many get burned out of temptation but it must burns itself slow with all pain and agony so that the spectre of darkness and ignorance do not hunt in pair. The metallic lamp again bumped to the huge trunk of that old mango tree. This time collision made it unbalanced, water gushed in and it met with a watery grave. Again it did not scream. May be the scream was not audible for that scream was never audible too when it holds that burning light and absorbs that blistering heat.

Ripples of water, big and small, depending on the size of obstacles. Obstacles are uprooted or broken and washed away ruthlessly. Sitting there he looked helplessly to that temple cow "Moti". Before he climbed up for safety he had brought Moti to the pandal of the temple to a place where the water current will be the least. He had tied Moti with a rope and other end to a hook on the temple wall. He had hoped and prayed that the flood water would not rise to that level to drown and kill Moti. Water rose and flowed, first thin and then dense, first slow then fast, first whispering and then drumming and gushing. The drumming and gushing is now mixed with the moan of the mango trees in the grove below, tattered billows, the clatter of coconut leaves.

The water rose further and now it touches the belly of the Moti, it sensed danger and tried to free itself from the rope. Water is growing wilder and so is Moti. The ghost of destruction loomed so large that the creative and godly quality of water grew so thin, so hazy and undefinable that gazing at it, he seemed to see it vanish altogether. Restlessness with Moti is growing. He must do something. He must hold Moti near to the temple wall. But how? He looked the bruises in his body. Those are continuously making some noises over his skin, noise of capillary flow, noise of shimmering pain, but those are not loud enough, those are not appealing enough and those are not alarming enough. Those sounds of bruises got overshadowed by the mooing of Moti. Is it mooing or calling? Is it mooing or crying? The naked and ugly dance of death like the ugly dance of water. The hiccup of death like the strident, shrill and sulky yowling of rasping water. His sacred thread supported on left shoulder and wrapped around his body hung in front of his eyes as he bent forward to see Moti. The sacred thread that he has assumed after his seventh birthday as per Hindu tradition and declared him as twice born with knowledge of waking, dreaming, dreamless sleeping and knowledge of absolute. It is that sacred thread which teaches him with purity of thought, word and deed. What is more sacred and more pure now other than listening and responding to Moti's mooing?

Patches of ferns on the wall of temple is still green. But it was no longer slippery as he climbed down near to the hook where the rope of Moti was tied. He pulled that rope hard till Moti came near to wall, standing parallel clinging to the wall. The current of water looked defeated for time being. He looked to the phosphorescence eyes of Moti gleaming in setting Sun. He saw his reflection in those gleaming eyes. Moti too must have seen its reflection on his eyes. They must have seen hope. A hope of tomorrow, a better tomorrow.

123 AGREEMENT AND INDIAN POLITICS.

123 AGREEMENT AND INDIAN POLITICS.

For last few weeks it had been the topic of discussion in India. The coalition government in India was in the blink of collapse as one of the coalition partner in the government, the left parties threatened to withdraw the support on the issue of Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement popularly known as 123 agreement. This agreement is for facilitating civil nuclear cooperation and commerce between India and United States.

If it is all about cooperation then why the coalition government in India is in danger? Why the allies of coalition government like left parties want to withdraw the support? Let us look into the whole issue. My analysis is no expert analysis, it for understanding of common populace. I have my own limitation but I will try to make the topic as lucid as possible.

INDIA'S NUCLEAR STRATEGY:

India has a three stages nuclear power program.

FIRST STAGE: Under this stage it has Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) for production of nuclear power. India has 15 operating Pressurized Heavy Water reactors. These PHWRs use natural Uranium as fuel. These PHWRs are located in various parts of India like Tarapur (Maharastra), Rawatbhatta (Rajasthan), Kalpakkam (TamilNadu), Narora (UttarPradesh), Kakrapar (Gujurat) and Kaiga (Karnataka).

SECOND STAGE: This stage includes "Fast Breeder Reactor". This uses Plutonium and also Uranium, in oxide form. It is pertinent to note here that the spent fuel from the PHWRs is reprocessed into Plutonium. This stage has just begun in India with the construction of the prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu).

THIRD STAGE: In this stage we have "Thorium Reactor" which uses Thorium and Uranium-233 as fuel. Uranium-233 is a man-made fissile material. Thorium is converted into Uranium-233 in the "Fast Breeder Reactor". Thorium is vastly available in India and Thorium-fuelled "Advanced Heavy Water Reactor" is about to begin.

Apart from these India also produces nuclear power through "Light Water Reactors (LWRs)". We have this facility at Tarapur (Maharastra).

BENEFITS TO INDIA IN IMPLEMENTING 123 AGREEMENT.

In the first place India can import LWRs to augment its nuclear power. Presently India generates 4120 MWe of nuclear power and six more reactors are under construction with total power generation capacity of 3160 MWe. India aims for generation of 20000 MWe of nuclear power by 2020. Hence import of LWRs is beneficial and inevitable.

Secondly this agreement will help India to import natural Uranium which shall help in setting up of more number of indigenous PHWRs.

Thirdly it shall help India in exporting PHWRs to the developing countries.

ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS FOR INDIA IF 123 AGREEMENT IS IMPLIMENTED.

It is apprehended that the U.S.'s game is to hit at India's indigenous three stage nuclear program because reprocessing forms the back bone of India's three stage program. 123 agreement falls under the HYDE ACT of U.S. and the Hyde Act denies the technology of reprocessing. It is felt that no upfront consent was given to India for reprocessing. India is allowed to make a "request" for reprocessing. Even if the U.S. consented to the request, it will go back to the congress for review.

Secondly it is further apprehended that Uranium suppliers will form a cartel and shall increase the price of the natural Uranium. Hence the cost of generating Electricity will go up.

Thirdly the implementation of this agreement would indirectly enable American Inspection of India's nuclear facilities

Fourthly because of the U.S.'s Hyde Act the uninterrupted supply of fuel for reactor is doubtful.

Now let us see through this video clip how far some of the honorable members of the Indian parliament have understood this nuclear agreement. Alas, these are the people who run the country and these are the people who are about to drag the country to a mid-term election, another carnival in tax payers' money.

http://www.ibnlive.com/videos/47467/the-nuclear-quotient-123-and-mps-begin-bu...

THINK! FOR THESE POLITICIANS 123 AGREEMENT MEANS "1----2----3---PULL THE GOVERNMENT"!! CRYING SHAME!!!
